Although it is not mandatory to have winter tires installed on your vehicles in Ontario, it is a good idea to do so. When the daily temperature drops below 7 °C, which generally takes place from late October to early April, the rubber compound used in All-Season and Summer Tires hardens and begins to lose traction. All-Season tires provide traction and grip in a variety of different weather conditions. However, during the winter season, slush and snow can often block the tire grooves and treads in all-season tires making it hard for drivers to avoid skidding. Winter tires, on the other hand, are designed with a more aggressive tread pattern, as well as a softer rubber compound that remains flexible in low temperatures. Winter tires are also designed to decrease the snow buildup on the tires. This improves braking performance in all types of winter conditions
The Ontario government has made it mandatory for insurance companies to provide discounts to drivers who have winter tires installed on their vehicles. However, depending on your insurance provider the discount and how it may apply on your policy will vary. Most drivers can expect to receive a 3-5% discount on their policy. It is important to note, that the insurance company may ask you to provide proof to confirm that the winter tires are installed before applying the discount, such as a receipt for purchase or installation, or a photograph. For more information, contact your insurance provider.
While it is possible to share one set of rims for your vehicle, purchasing a separate set of rims specifically for your winter tires can be beneficial in the long run. The initial up-front cost of new rims will save you time and money during seasonal tire changes. By purchasing a designated set of rims for your winter tires, you eliminate the additional cost of mounting, re-mounting, and balancing your wheels each year with a single set of rims. In addition, by owning a separate set of winter tires, you are also extending the overall lifespan of the rims on your summer or all-season tires from the harsh ice, snow, and salt-covered winter roads.
